Title: MUSICOS 1998: Observations of the Rotational Modulation and
Flares of the RS CVn Binary HR1099 (V711 Tau)

Abstract: We present the simultaneous and continuous observations of
,
,
He D3, NaI Doublet, Ca II H & K, and
Ca II IRT lines of the chromospherically active binary
HR1099 (V711). It is one of the most active RSCVn
spectroscopic binary systems (
Prot=2d.8 )
with G5V/K1IV components. Its tidally induced rapid
rotation, combined with the deepened convection zone of a
post main sequence envelope, is responsible for the very
high chromospheric activity for its spectral class. The
primary (K1IV) shows very strong and variable CaII H & K
and
emission that is indicative of high
chromospheric activity. The spectroscopic observations have
been obtained during the MUSICOS 1998 campaign involving
OHP, SAAO, La Palma, Kitt Peak, ESO La Silla, Mt Stromlo,
Xinglong and LNA, using both Echelle and Long Slit
Spectrographs. We have observed HR1099 for more than 3 weeks
almost continuously and monitored two flares. Increase in
and Ca II H & K emission, emission in
and He D3 and a strong filling-in of the NaI Doublet during
the flares have been reported. We have found that the flares
took place at the same phase (0.85) of the binary orbit.
