Title: Future Capabilities for Space-Based Stellar Observations
Abstract: The strategic plans and roadmaps of the various international space agencies contain a number of space-based missions of potential interest to the solar/stellar community. Don Hassler will summarize the planned solar missions in a companion paper at this meeting. In this paper I will review those space-based missions which are aimed outward, at other stars, and will thus permit comparative studies with the sun, as well as studies of those stars in their own right. I will include both near term facilities (e.g., new instruments to be installed on the HST in the next two servicing missions) and missions planned, or in concept development for potential flight, for the intermediate (< 2010, e.g., GALEX, NGST, FAME, SIM, GAIA, TPF) and far (> 2010, e.g., SUVO/HSTII, SI, XEUS, MAXIM, SPECS, PI) time horizons.
