Title: CHIANTI - an atomic database for UV and X-ray cool star
spectroscopy
Abstract: The CHIANTI database contains state-of-the-art atomic data
suitable
for the analysis of UV and X-ray emission line spectra from
collisionally ionized plasmas, such as cool star transition
regions
and coronae. In addition, a set of IDL routines are included
to allow
the straightforward computation of synthetic spectra and the
study of
emission line temperature and density diagnostics. All
atomic data
are assessed before inclusion in the database, and updates
to specific
ions are made when new data becomes available. The current
status of
the database will be described in preparation for the
release of
version 4, which will include proton excitation rates for
the first
time.
CHIANTI has found application in the analysis of spectra
from SOHO,
HST, EUVE, FUSE, Chandra and XMM, with over 100 references
in refereed
journals. Many other uses of CHIANTI have been found,
including the
derivation of the temperature response of the EIT and TRACE
solar
imaging instruments, the calibration of the SERTS EUV
spectrometer and
the analysis of UV spectra of the Jupiter-Io plasma torus.
Examples
will be presented.
