Boulder is over a mile high (1,650 metres), and the hiking trails and climbs
in the nearby mountains typically range from 8,000-13,000 feet
(2,450-4,000 metres) above sea-level.
Some people experience a slight shortness of breath when first arriving in Denver and
while staying in Boulder for the first few days.
The following will rules-of-thumb will help make your visit more
enjoyable;
- Drink plenty of water, if you feel dehydrated you already are!
- Use sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 15, preferably 30.
- Bring Sun glasses.
- Moderate your alcohol consumption (less is better).
- Consume less rich foods.
- Avoid vigorous activities for the first couple of days
As one climbs to higher altitudes from Boulder, you might again experience
shortness of breath. In the mountains the weather can change rapidly - in the Summer
afternoon thunderstorms and rain showers are common. Visitors are advised to bring
"layered clothing", including warmer layers and waterproofs jackets.
